Introduction

Please allow me to briefly introduce myself. My name is Desmund Manaba, the owner of Molokai Wildlife 

Management, Inc., where we focus on deer conservation. I am passionate about my family and about being a good steward of the land, so it can be preserved for future generations. For over 15 years now, I have done Axis deer conservation on Molokai, and my wife Christy and I have successfully built and currently operate a USDA certified deer slaughter and processing facility. 

While building our facility, we spoke with many people in the Hawaii meat industry and we gained a lot of 

knowledge on what it takes to operate a USDA slaughter and process plant. While gathering this information, we also learned about the challenges that many of you on Hawaii Island face with getting your cattle into a slaughter and processing facility. 

Being dedicated to helping others and preserving our local way of life, along with the support of my wife Christy, we have committed to opening a state of the art beef processing facility on the Big Island. Our facility, Kamuela Meat Company, Inc., has been developed around meeting the needs of the small to mid-size rancher. Our commitment is to the generations of family-owned ranches, who have endured great hardships, to ensure you have a way to complete the process of raising your cattle and bring them to slaughter & process without having to send cattle off to the mainland. 

As a vital part of preserving this important heritage of Big Island ranchers and sustaining our State’s food supply, this is the least we can do. 

Kamuela Meat Company is slated to open operations within the next year.  As this letter is being written, we 

have approximately 4,800 slaughter spots open for upcoming year. We are well aware that this will not meet the vast need currently not being met, but it is our first step in the right direction. 

 If you are in need of committed processing, we are looking to gather written commitments from ranchers.
